5 things to keep in mind if you want to travel this summer

Are you dreaming of long days of sitting on a beach, feeling the sun warm your face, and forgetting about absolutely everything?

Summer is just around the corner and for most of us, that means a much-needed break. While travel planning may still require a few more considerations than in the past, there are many ways to go abroad this summer. So as you check flight prices, coordinate friends, and book accommodation, here are five simple things to keep in mind if you want to travel this summer.

1. Flexibility is key

The one thing the pandemic has taught us all is to be flexible. This lesson rings especially true when it comes to planning a summer trip. If you plan on flying, there is a chance that your flights may get cancelled or moved. There may also be changes to quarantine requirements and testing. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay home. Just remember to keep an open mind and accept there are plenty of things out of our control. Going with the flow will ensure you won’t be disappointed when plans need to change.

2. Plan A, B, and C

If your plans are derailed at the last minute, having a few backup plans will mean that you can still enjoy a summer abroad. Write down a Plan, A, B and C, so you don’t get stuck at home.

  • Plan A: This is your ideal summer plan. It may involve a specific dream destination, or traveling further afield.

  • Plan B: Another country or city that you’d still be happy to visit. Stay up-to-date on local rules.

  • Plan C: Perhaps this one is a less exotic destination, and a little closer to home but you can still enjoy a great summer here.

3. Extend your stay

With additional costs of quarantine, testing and increased flight prices, it makes sense to stay as long as you can to make the most of your trip. Can you extend your trip from your normal two weeks to a month or two? This will also give you more time to settle into your destination, make friends and really start “living like a local”.

4. Nature is calling

Visiting restaurants, bars, museums and shops are normal holiday activities, but it’s hard to know exactly what will be open this summer. So when choosing a destination, consider activities you can do outside that won’t be affected by restrictions.

One of the best experiences of my life was bike riding through the Austrian alps, with nothing but the sounds of cowbells jangling in the wind. It was absolute heaven, completely away from other people, and it didn’t cost a cent. Hiking, bike riding, swimming and camping are all activities that allow you to explore the great outdoors peacefully. And let’s be honest, after being cooped up inside for the past year, getting lost in nature has never been more appealing.

5. Eco-friendly exploring

Public transport is a great way to travel locally, but it can sometimes make it harder to maintain your distance. One of my favorite things to do in a new city is hiring a bike and exploring the city like a local. Cycle paths will take you behind the scenes, and away from the crowds in a matter of minutes. So whether you’re staying local or flying across the globe, bike riding is an eco-friendly, cheap, and safe way to travel.

We know how important travel, socializing and doing the things we love are to our mental health and happiness. For many of us, the absence of travel has left a big hole in our lives. So as you plan your well-deserved summer vacation, just remember to be flexible, open-minded and think carefully about where you want to go. That summer sun can’t come soon enough!
