After graduating from EF Academy Torbay, I moved to the US for university. I moved with the knowledge that I would have to financially support myself so I applied to multiple jobs before I even settled in. Since then I have worked in customer service, sales and marketing, business development, operations, logistics, recruitment and more. People often ask me why I am such a workaholic, and as much as I hate to admit it, there are certainly some pros and cons of the gig economy.
<h3>Pro #1: Extensive work experience</h3>
When I was in university, my biggest fear was not being able to find a job after graduation. However, due to the extensive and diverse work experience I have, I can now easily prove my ability to adapt quickly and my broad knowledge in a range of fields. In addition, work references are easy to come by if you have a good work ethic. The best example of this from my life is that, as a psychology student, I was hired as a logistic planner because they trusted my ability to learn after seeing that I maintained a 4.0 GPA while working multiple jobs in university.
<h3>Pro #2: New tasks and multiple incomes</h3>
I consider myself to have a bubbly personality, and I love having new challenges every day. Accepting different responsibilities keeps me on my toes and ensures I don’t get bored with my jobs. For creative people like me, having different short-term gigs or projects to work on also allows us to maximize our ideas and show our potential to the fullest. Besides, who doesn’t love getting a paycheck every week (most companies in the US pay bi-weekly).
<h3>Pro #3: Working remotely</h3>
Working remotely is a relatively new concept that has revolutionized the world of work. Since I can’t physically work in different locations for multiple companies, working remotely has become my preference. All you need is a good internet connection, strong communication skills and the trust of your employers in your self-discipline to work outside the office. It can be difficult to convince large companies to allow remote work, so working with smaller startups is generally preferable as they’re more open to it. It’s also great to work in companies where every move matters and I can help them to grow.
<h3>Con #1: FOMO</h3>
For me, the most difficult thing while working multiple gigs is maintaining a good work-life balance. Often there have been days when I don’t feel I have enough sleep, food or fun. FOMO (fear of missing out) has definitely increased for me because working more than 12 hours per day is usual. It’s at its worst when everyone has gone for happy hour and I stayed for overtime. But I do make sure that I don’t miss out on special events!
<h3>Con #2: Burnout</h3>
I personally find working to be enjoyable, but it can be too much sometimes, even for me. Constantly working my brain can take a toll, especially when I focus on my work almost every working moment. I find myself skipping meals, not exercising and staying up late. It sometimes feels like there isn’t enough time in the day for everything and it can affect my mental and physical health. However, at times like this, it is important to take time for yourself to recover. There is no shame in taking a break!
<h3>Con #3: High expectations</h3>
All your bosses will set deadlines and expectations for you. When so much is expected of you by different people it can become overwhelming. Being able to multitask and prioritize is essential, but there is always a limit. It’s even harder when bosses recognize your talents and want to add even more to your plate. There were definitely times when I thought twice about my jobs. With that being said, it is okay to know that you are not a superhero. Keep your priorities straight and learn to turn down a job, if needed.
But hey, there’s a reason why people like me still love working. I personally think the payoff is far better than what I need to trade-in. Here are some tips for you if you’re thinking about doing the same:
<h3>Tip #1: Take time for yourself</h3>
During the week be sure you save some days for yourself to take a break. It is easier said than done at times but a good way to overcome this is to schedule a vacation. It could be a couple of weeks ahead or a couple of months, but as long as it’s in the calendar it gives you something to look forward to. In my experience, a nice change of scenery will always relieve the stress.
<h3>Tips #2: Manage your work time</h3>
As important as it is to schedule your personal time, it is equally important to schedule your work time. Work can be enjoyable, and you’ll be far more productive if you manage your responsibilities effectively. Organizing due dates will help you manage your time. Knowing what to expect from the day helps it run smoother. Having a ‘to-do list’ is a must and apps like Slack, Trello or even a personal planner can be of great help for you.
<h3>Tip #3: Remember your goals</h3>
Every day I wake up I want to be sure that I am one day closer to my dream. I set up short-term and long-term goals and try to stay on track. For me, my overall goal is to work hard, save up money and travel the world while working remotely. It is because of this goal that I strive for success in my work and can manage multiple jobs. Keep pushing for your own goals and you’ll find yourself where you need to be.

Want to study in the UK or US? Here’s what you need to know

I had been studying on the High School Preparation Course for 5 months before I’ve started my IB program. Actually, I found this course really helpful because I’ve learned a lot of new knowledge and skills which will be useful in my future.
Academically, our program was divided into 4 subjects: Exam Preparation, Study Skills, Literacy, General English and Learning Outside the Classroom. This division helped me to focus on different parts of English learning and to get much more from this course.
In June, I passed FCE Exam, for which I had been preparing since April. I found it difficult because I hadn’t had lots of time to learn all stuff that I had to know. However, I can say that I’ve achieved lots from that, I’ve become more confident in my abilities and I had much practice as well, which is involved plenty of teamwork, writing tasks and reading exercises.
Furthermore, I joined many out-school trips, such as Eden Project, Living Coast, Brixham Trip and others, that helped me to develop as a person. Also, we had some activities after school, like badminton, ultimate frisbee, etc. So, I got a lot of new skills and experience.

As for moral aspect, I’ve been always supported by teachers, so I knew I could rely on their help at any time. In general, all the teachers are very understanding and patient in terms of study, so I’ve always being helped with essay writing (which I found the most difficult part of learning English), listening practice and others important things, that I had problems with.
To sum up, I’d like to say that the High School Preparation Course is a great opportunity to learn language and get used to school life in EF Academy. It includes many different and interesting things, so it’s not only about study. Also, it helps to develop skills that you’ve already had and to get new as well.

A Level and IB students from EF Torbay visited that UCAS university exhibition at the West Point convention center in Exeter yesterday and then had a guided tour and admissions lectures from faculty heads. The Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) is a UK-based organization whose main role is to operate the application process for British universities. It operates as an independent charity, funded by fees charged to applicants and to universities, plus advertising income.
Services provided by UCAS include several online application portals, a number of search tools, and free information and advice directed at various audiences, including students considering higher education, students with pending applications to higher education institutes, parents and legal guardians of applicants, school and Further Education college staff involved in helping students apply, and providers of higher education (universities and HE colleges). Basically it’s the door way to all UK universities.
The UCAS convention is a huge event that is held in key areas around the country and it’s a must for students who are applying to university as it will be attended by a huge number of universities from across the country all trying to attract students. Full of information and a vast number of free pens and prospectuses it’s a gold mine of information.
Some students have a very clear idea of what they are looking for and head straight for their chosen uni’s armed with relevant question while others use it as a scouting operation to get a better idea of what they are looking for. Either way it’s very useful. 
In the afternoon we headed to Exeter University which is our closest, only 30 minutes away, and a source of great pride in the southwest of England. It’s a truly impressive place as it’s the size of a small town but it’s a uni with a great feel , full of wide open space and a mix of modern and older architecture.
The university was founded and received its Royal Charter in 1955, although its predecessor institutions, the Royal Albert Memorial College and the University College of the South West of England, were established in 1900 and 1922 respectively. 
The university has four campuses: Streatham and St Luke’s (both of which are in Exeter); and Truro and Penryn (both of which are in Cornwall). The university is centred in the city of Exeter, Devon, where it is the principal higher education institution. Streatham is the largest campus containing many of the university’s administrative buildings, and is regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country. The Penryn campus is maintained in conjunction with Falmouth University under the Combined Universities in Cornwall (CUC) initiative.
The university was named the Sunday Times University of the Year in 2013 and was the Times Higher Education University of the Year in 2007. Exeter has maintained a top ten position in the National Student Survey since the survey was launched in 2005. In 2011, it was considered as being one of the top 12 elite universities in England (based on the proportion of incoming students with at least AAB at A Level), and the university is one of only eight universities to be ranked within the top 10 of all three major national league tables for 2016.
Exeter is a member of the Russell Group of leading research-intensive UK universities. The university is also a member of Universities UK, the European University Association, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities and is an accredited institution of the Association of MBAs (AMBA).
We were greeted by a team of students and admissions staff outside the massive Great Hall in the stunning piazza and treated to a tour of the university including the science research center, I.T Sweet and sports facilities. Afterwards, we went to one of the largest lecture halls in the uni and had a questions and answers session with admissions team. 
It was a fantastic day and really useful to the students.

On Wednesday 22nd November a new tradition was born: our first annual inter-house talent contest. Students from Ansteys, Elberry, Oyster and Saltern stepped onto the stage at Upton Vale to show the school their talents and to represent their houses. It was an incredible afternoon, showing the wide range of ways in which our students excel. Abdulbasit Haruna was our host, doing an outstanding job of welcoming acts on stage and congratulating their skill and bravery after they had performed.
Before the competitive element began, the Singing Club opened the event with a number from the musical ‘Chicago’, this was followed by Maria Meirabova and Liudmila Vasileva performing a dance routine of their own devising, one which they had been rehearsing for two months!
Jill Wang was the first student to represent their house, doing Saltern proud with a beautiful piece on the piano. She was followed by Abdellah Badaoui for Oyster, bringing the show firmly into the 21st Century by showing us how to build a techno dance music track.
As if to show just how diverse our school is, Abdellah handed the stage back to Saltern and Nicolas Mediato Diaz who proudly proclaimed ‘I can’t sing and I don’t dance, but I can do math.’ Nicolas went on to demonstrate with ease some very complicated number bonds and had our final year mathematicians on their feet in awe of his skill, earning a new nickname: The Professor.
Next up, representing Ansteys, Zoe Balboainvited the Head on to the stage to help with her act of contortionism. To equal levels of horror and delight, Zoe demonstrated the ability to revolve her arm almost 360 degrees and to invert her elbow. We were, and are, lost for words.
It was then back to the piano with Elberry’s Mohammed Reza with a beautiful and moving piece played with great skill. We were delighted to have Reza’s mother in the audience, too. Eugene Tan of Saltern then showed his vulnerable side, singing a heartfelt song.
Our ninth contestant turned out to be Mexico’s secret super star: Oyster’s Pedro Borrego. Pedro took the microphone with professional confidence, explaining his choice of a traditional Mexican song and that while we could clap at the end if we liked, we must not clap at the beginning. By the time he had finished singing, the whole building rose to give a standing ovation. It was only modesty that prevented Pedro signing autographs at the end of the show.
Nicola Xu then took to the piano for Saltern and played not one but twopieces. Nicola’s energetic playing wowed us all and had the host, Basit, asking for lessons. Nicola handed over to Yu Sum Tse of Elberry house. Yu Yu revealed a delicate yet powerful voice.
Prae Lalitanantpong surprised us all, shrugging off her usually quiet and reserved persona to put on an amazing show for Oyster house, and going out into the crowd, winning many fans in the process. Nawfal Lyoussi was the penultimate contestant and the final pianist of the day .
The competitive element came to an end with Ansteys’ group song. Led by Osama Lahreche, a small band of Ansteys students sang the theme song for their house from the islands project. We were left in no doubt as to their commitment to their house.

In the grand scheme of things perhaps student leadership isn’t going to change the world. But maybe it will be the making of our young leaders and who knows where it could lead them.
These positions are not simply a vanity project or a way of the school saying it’s something we do. Last year’s student council made a real difference to the lives of both students and staff in the school because they made themselves heard with eloquence and confidence.
One example of the power that these student had was when they managed to change the entire school timetable because it was widely felt that lunchtime was not long enough and students struggled to get their lunch and have enough down time. The student council listened and made their case.
This example shows how seriously we take our young leaders and how important their work can be. This is not to make it sound easy. Balancing the wishes of all the students within the realities of the school is not easy but what’s important is that students feel they are listened to and that they have the chance to express themselves.
We have a greatly expanded student leadership team this year because we have leadership positions for our houses and these guys will be particularly busy organizing house events and helping their Heads of Houses.
As well as House leadership roles we have also created a great student council who’s role it is to act as a bridge between the staff, school and the students on matters ranging from academics to activities and they will keep us on our toes. We also have a Boarding committee who will work with Kelly our Head of Boarding and activities and finance committee who will help Chris Nicholls the Enrichment Coordinator to plan finances for events and to organize key events like the graduation and prom.
Of course the key positions in the school are the Head Boy and Head Girl who have a central role to play in the school. This year’s Head boy and Girl are Moritz Brinker’s and Matilde Bianchi two fantastic students who will undoubtedly work hard to do all they can to improve our school. We will hear more from these students soon because they will be interviewed for this blog but the entire school was delighted by their appointments.
The other thing that is important is that we allow our students the chance to gain this valuable experience and to test out their ambitions in the microcosm of the school learning valuable skills like negotiation, compromise, team work and determination. They are the ones to watch.

Favorite clubs: Keen (Oxford) – we spent time with children who have disabilities, we played games with them and sometimes we would go ice skating or swimming all together; and Cooking Club with Joan because food is amazing and making it with friends is always fun.

What was your first impression of EF Academy?
It was very busy and very vibrant and I enjoyed that. Everything was so open! I decided that I wanted to go to university in England so I thought it would be a good idea if I went to high school there so I could get used to the system and the country. Then I learned about EF and EF Academy and I went for it.
What did you enjoy about living in the residence?
I enjoyed being together will my friends all the time. There were communal areas where we could meet and hang out – I didn’t really have that when I lived with a host family. If I needed help, I could always find someone who was willing to help. And, of course, after-study-time snacks and Sunday snacks – food is always good.
What did you find exciting about the IB program?
That I could do so many different things. There were so many different subjects and also the Theory of Knowledge and CAS parts. I liked CAS because I could do different activities that counted toward my diploma. For CAS, I swam, volunteered at Keen, worked at a homeless shelter and I was part of Drama Club. But doing so many things was also the challenging part of the program. It was a lot of work, especially the Extended Essay.
How did you choose your current university and your program?
I wanted to do medicine but I have a difficult time with the “gross stuff,” and I still wanted to help people so I thought I would go into research. Biomedical Science is medicine without interacting with patients. I found Surrey because it’s a good university and close to London, but still has a campus. That’s what I was looking for: a university with a campus that is near a big city. So far I am very happy with my decision.
Did you do any internships that have benefited your studies or your career plan?
I did an internship at a pharmacy, an internship at a diagnostic lab in a hospital and I did a job shadow in a research hospital in Innsbruck. The research lab taught me the most because that’s what I want to do in my career and I learned what research is like. I would advise everyone to do as many internships as possible.
What is your favorite part about university?
Meeting different people from all over the world. There are so many different nationalities here and I love that. And there are a lot of clubs, there’s always something to do. I’m involved in squash, surfing and go-karting. You meet so many people and everyone is so open. It has never been this easy to make friends!
Describe a regular day…
I get up around 7 am, get ready, go to lectures and have lunch. I’m usually done around 3 or 5 pm. Then sometimes I go to the gym or I go home and do work. Sometimes there are club meetings. Usually on Wednesdays we play squash, and go-karting is usually once a month in the evenings as well.
What advice do you have for current students?
Don’t spend all your time studying, go out and do things. Enjoy every moment because you will miss everything when you graduate – even the things that are bothering you now.
What is the accomplishment you are proudest of?
Earning my IB Diploma score and getting into the university that I wanted.
What is your dream for your future?
Through my profession, I want to help people. If they are sick I want to give them a better outlook for their future. I’ll see where life will take me after my time at university in the UK.

Last Friday, the OXFAM Group decided to organize a Halloween Party for their fellow students in order to support the charity; a brilliant money-making scheme which also involved having a lot of fun, as proclaimed in their mission statement:
‘We (OXFAM) are organizing a Halloween party on the 23rd of October. This is to celebrate Halloween and also to raise a sense of school spirit. However our real goal is to raise money for the refugees that are suffering from the Syrian Crisis.
This is a benefit for all different aspects of the school, for EF OXFAM and for the EF Academy students. It will be beneficial to the school because it shows how much school spirit EF Academy students have and will also raise student satisfaction. By organizing this party the members of EF OXFAM will gain a sense of responsibility and will understand how to organize and set up events as well as think critically to solve conflicts. For first years especially, this will help them to understand how to set up big activities, so later on in the year they can reflect on what they did and will be able to organize similar activities in the future.’
The past few weeks therefore saw much secretive planning by the OXFAM Team until the day itself came and all their hard work was revealed when the doors to the lecture hall,  which had been decorated so as to turn it into a creepy disco floor, were opened to the crowd which had formed outside.
On entering the students were greeted by their hosts in fancy dress selling cakes they had made for £1 along with pizza and sweets. You could also have your face painted or a very realistic wound created on your arm by some highly skilled student make-up artists.

On the day of US Presidential elections we at EF Academy Oxford staged our own debate. Yesterday saw the first House Debate Competition of 2016 take place with Keble arguing against Oriel for the statement “This house believes that the restriction of freedom of speech compromises creativity”.
First speaker, Iulia, confidently delivered a passionate speech, referencing Article 10 of the UN Human Rights to claim that free speech is a right, not a freedom. She argued that “when creativity is prevented society doesn’t reach its full potential”.
First speaker of the opposition, Uday counter-argued that governments need to regulate and monitor our actions for our own safety, albeit to the detriment of creative acts. This was echoed in second speaker, Andoni’s statement that creative acts cannot be fully controlled as guerilla movements will always exist in tightly regulated areas.
Throughout the debate Allen chaired the discussion, keeping times and directing speakers so the official format was correctly adhered to.
Following the construction (the section of a debate when the first speakers give an opening statement for two minutes, uninterrupted) our speakers went head to head in a ‘Crossfire’ in which the first speakers had to argue against their opposition’s question. Then we had a rebuttal (when the second speakers each make a speech to strengthen the original argument and defend their point against the opposition’s first speech). The rebuttal was  followed by a second cross fire (giving the second speakers an opportunity to interrogate their opponent’s speech and defend their own).
Before the third speaker summarized the debate questions were taken from the audience who would then vote for which house they believed led the strongest argument. The winner is to be revealed in a later assembly!
The students successfully constructed arguments interweaving subject knowledge from other areas of the curriculum (Nelson Mandela, Maya Angelou, the KKK and North Korea) were cited to strengthen arguments and demonstrated an awareness of creativity and military intervention on a global scale.
Personally I was impressed by the enthusiasm shown by all speakers and hope the students are proud of their ability to partake in an academic argument in a new format and in a second language!

As usual in our Tuesday assembly at <a href="https://www.efacademy.com/oxford/">EF Academy Oxford</a>, a student presents a topic they are really passionate about, which is also part of their studies. Last Tuesday I did a presentation about the odd field of Mathematics known as Number Theory. This is probably one of the oldest areas of Maths, having already been developed during the Babylonian era around 1800 BC. Theories about number theory deal with integers (whole numbers), their connections, and the way they behave. There are plenty of fantastic ideas behind them, but two are really worth discussing.
The first one regards the magic field of prime numbers. They are all those integers divisible only by two numbers. An easy example is 2 which can be divided only by 1 and 2.
At this stage, you might be asking what a potential application of these particular numbers is. The answer is encryption. Any digital data is encrypted to be kept safe and prevent others from reading personal information, such as credit cards numbers while purchasing online. The system is based on a large key created by two primes: the process is slightly complicated, but it primarily consists in factorising (expressing as a product of primes) a huge (millions of digits) number created by the multiplication of two huge prime numbers.
At this point, some of the most appealing and unsolved questions in Mathematics arise: how can I spot prime numbers quickly? Is there any pattern among them?
If there was, the whole encrypting system currently used would collapse and there would be no information security anymore.
The other theorem I would like to show is “Fermat’s Last Theorem”. It was conjectured by the French mathematician Pierre de Fermat in the seventeenth century, and it has been unsolved for more than 350 years. What Fermat said was that a^n + b^n = c^n has no solution for any n equal or greater than 3. For instance, picking any three integers a, b and c, is it possible to create an equality such that a^3 + b^3 = c^3? His answer was no, and he also added mysteriously that “I have discovered a truly marvellous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain”.
This problem made some of the most brilliant mathematicians struggle, and this is also why many just gave up, and the problem was just left in a folder of unsolved problems while others were prioritised. In was 1995 when the Cantabrigian mathematician Andrew Wiles proved it. It took him over 7 years of private study and work to come up with one of the most brilliant ideas of the whole mathematical community. Its proof was tremendously complicated since it involved ideas from the neo and advanced fields of elliptic curves. Practically what Prof. Wiles did was to prove a conjecture from two Japanese mathematicians about the roots of elliptic curves, then to use it to prove the absence of roots for the equation mentioned above.

On Thursday 25 April, the EF Academy Oxford class of 2019 graduated in Oxford’s Town Hall. To celebrate the occasion, Dr. Paul Ellis, Head of School, gave this address to graduating students.
“Why does it matter that around ninety students, two years ago, made the bold decision to be part of a boarding school community of over forty different nationalities?  It matters because these young men and women before you embody the values that will make a better world. Global connectedness. Open-mindedness. Diversity. In other words, our graduating students are the means of greater international understanding and togetherness.
They – you, are global leaders by virtue of what you have become. In your time here at EF Academy Oxford, you have gained, above all, global confidence. You are ready now to join a wider global community and to make a truly positive global impact. In preparation for this task, you have over the course of almost twenty months taken on new challenges. You have learned new skills. You have initiated and planned projects together. You have demonstrated individual commitment. You have practised ethical decision-making. It is to your credit that you have in your time here: helped the homeless; undertaken medical volunteering; conserved the natural environment and wildlife; raised funds for charities; done various kinds of community work with the elderly, the disabled, the disadvantaged; you have volunteered in museums; shared your culture and language with others; and more. You have thereby acquired the kind of experiences that will give you the personal authority to make real changes for the better in the world.
You have spent most of your time here, however, perfecting your pathway to university success. You have worked hard at your A-level or IB studies – some of you very hard indeed – and taken good advantage of the hundreds of academic extension opportunities on offer. It is probably through your future job that you will have the most impact in the world. You have offers – actual placements, in the case of US universities – from some of the very best universities in the world. Whether as an architect, doctor, engineer, lawyer, manager, or scientist, you will help shape the future world in a way that respects its variety and differences.
But what about all those unknowable jobs? The Institute for the Future, in California, recently published a report on the impact that emerging technologies will have on society and work. If the report is right, 85% of jobs in 2030 will be newly invented. What seems clear, however, is that we all need to be quick thinking, highly motivated, digitalised, and globally agile. We need the mindset of project-designers, problem-solvers, freelancers, and lifelong learners. What better place to have prepared for this kind of global job market than in a genuinely international school such as ours, where fast-paced adaptability and a keen awareness of different approaches are expected of you from Day 1, and repeatedly so over two years? Knowing you as I do, I also think that you have the skills and attitude not just to do these unknown jobs, but rather to create them. And remember, you will have connections and support out there in this ultra-competitive environment: you are joining a global EF Academy alumni network of thousands from around 80 countries or more.
This competitive edge in a global job market, this wider global confidence, this valuing of all people from all places – all these, are qualities that make you stand out from local students educated in their home countries. Moreover, your global interaction at EF Academy Oxford is particularly precious to all of us in this room – and outside it – as we witness, sadly, the rise of extreme nationalism and isolationism. You are globally literate people, immeasurably more so than people of my generation who, in the main, have too much influence in how things are. You are the champions of a unified global commitment to both humanity and to the environment.
But, as I admire your individual passion for photography or music or art or dance or drama or sport, I am also reminded that as well as saving humanity and the planet, you do need to take time out for personal growth and for pure enjoyment. Continue to make time to develop your wider creativity and talents. Most importantly, make time to nurture the friendships you have made here. As alumni always seem to say, quite rightly: “the best thing about EF Academy Oxford is making friends from all over the world!” And with global friendships, we have the beginnings of learning how to create a nicer world! So you are raised high here on the stage not just so that you can be seen more easily, but also to remind the rest of us that we need to get used to looking up to you as global leaders! Thank you.”
