<p>School can be tough and take over a lot of our time for other activities and interests. Sure, this is when time management is more crucial than ever, but we’re also only given a certain amount of time during the day. That’s where school breaks come in. Be it our winter break or summer break, we have time off from schoolwork to focus more time on ourselves in other ways, here are seven ways to make the most of your school break.</p>
<h3><strong>1. Stay healthy and active</strong></h3>
<p>Health should always come first. Which is why it’s vital not to forget to be active and exercise each day. Even though we might get tempted to play on our consoles and binge watch TV shows all day, it’s important to keep our bodies healthy and robust. You can do this by going for a run, cycling for a few miles, or swimming a few laps each day.</p>
<p>And of course, while exercise is important, don’t forget to build yourself a balanced diet. Even though it’s delicious, your meals can’t all be ice cream and soda throughout vacation! Try to limit your treats to a couple of times a week when you can.</p>
<h3><strong>2. Stay sharp</strong></h3>
<p>Even though you’ve finished your final exams, you need to make sure you don’t forget what you learned throughout the last school year. A good way to stay sharp during your break is to review everything you’ve learned so far. All this would require is for you to sit down for an hour or two each day and study one subject. Make a routine to make sure you don’t leave out any important subjects or topics.</p>
<h3><strong>3. Pursue a hobby</strong></h3>
<p>With so much free time on your hands, you might want to pursue a hobby like cooking, dancing, or photography. This will give you a chance to develop unique skills and find your talents. Spending just one or two hours each day pursuing a hobby can also help reduce stress.</p>
<p>Once you find a hobby that you’re really into, you can choose to do something more in-depth with it. If your hobby is music or performing arts, you could take a <a href="https://www.trinitycollege.com/site/?id=1044" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Trinity exam</a>. If you’re into acting, try going to auditions at various agencies and theaters.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Volunteer</strong></h3>
<p>Although it’s never a bad time to give something back to society, summer breaks give us plenty of extra time to do something more concrete. You could organize charity events, volunteer at a local church, or work with some of the NGOs in your area. Find a cause you’re passionate about and you’ll make the most out of the time you spend doing community service.</p>
<h3><strong>5. Visit and research universities</strong></h3>
<p>Your school break is the best time to start writing out college essays and filling out university applications, especially if you’re a Junior. If you’re not sure about the universities you want to apply to, then this is a great time to research and figure out which schools you’d be most interested in.</p>

<h3><strong>6. Spend quality time with loved ones</strong></h3>
<p>A busy school schedule means you get to spend less time with your family and old friends, especially if you choose to <a href="https://www.efacademy.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">study abroad for high school</a>. School breaks are when you can make up for the time you spent away. Go out for meals, play board games, attend concerts, go camping, or do anything else that can help you make more valuable memories with them.</p>
<p>If you’re studying abroad, buy some gifts for your friends and family before you leave campus and bring them with you. Your loved ones will be so happy that you haven’t forgotten them. After all, that’s something you might get taunts for when you meet them after a couple of months. So come prepared with gifts!</p>
<h3><strong>7. Do an internship or summer course</strong></h3>
<p>If you have a good idea about what you want to study during university or if you have a keen interest in something, doing a summer program or course in that area of interest is a great idea. Some of the best universities offer summer programs for 2-7 weeks. It’s a good way to gain exposure to your favorite subjects (and you’ll be collecting brownie points for your university application!)</p>
<p>If a summer program isn’t an option for you, try to <a href="https://www.ef.com/wwen/blog/efacademyblog/importance-internships/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">do an internship</a> in a company related to your fields of interest. Seeing what they do is a good way to gain exposure to the challenges in this role and what you might be expected to know when you work in that field in the future. It’s also another awesome way to show universities that you’re serious about what you want to do in the future.</p>

<p>Graduating might be the most overwhelming event of your life that you’ve experienced yet. And that might be an <em>understatement</em>. Now, you are officially an adult and expected to figure out what you want to do with your life in the next few years.</p>
<p>That might sound intimidating at first, but you’ll figure it out in no time. I’m sure everyone is stressing out and overthinking everything that’s happening, so I’ve come up with three ways to help you through this supercalifragilisticexpialidocious phase. Instead of feeling like your life is falling apart during this transition, think of everything as falling into place – because it truly is.</p>
<h4>1. Stop Stressing Out</h4>
<p>Senior year finals, college admission results, and getting ready to leave high school. I’m sure you must be trying your best not to, but it feels inevitable to stress out with so much going on in your life. The best thing to do at such a time is just take three deep breaths and tell yourself <em>I’ve got this!</em> Even though you might actually feel like your life is falling apart.</p>
<p>Regardless of what you might be feeling, getting anxious over all of it is not a good idea at all. Instead of being too overwrought while looking at it, you should be getting excited because you have a couple more years of assignments and early mornings coming up!</p>
<h4>2. Focus On Your Finals</h4>
<p>In the midst of all the madness, it’s facile to lose sight of what’s most important, and that’s your finals. Even if you’ve gotten into the university of your choice, its critical for you to be able to match the predicted grades given by your teachers (or come close) to say the least.</p>
<p>Although rare, it is possible that some of the universities change their mind about letting you join them that session. This would be as a result of your final scores not being up to the mark. Hopefully, you paid attention and took notes in your classes the whole year and just have to revise to prepare for each paper. If not, hang in there buddy.</p>
<h4>3. Cherish These Moments</h4>
<p>Although this sounds catchy and cliched, this is probably the most valuable pointer I can leave you with. These last few weeks will pass at warp speed and you’ll soon be leaving high school forever; take a minute to absorb that. Now that you have, make sure to be as involved as you can with your friends and everything going on at the campus because this is how you will create memories that will last you a lifetime.</p>
<p>Do everything you wanted to when you first started attending high school and still haven’t been able to, considering it’s not ‘frowned upon’ by the school. Get the contact details of your friends other than their Snapchat and Instagram usernames, and your teachers if you’re starting to feel really nostalgic.</p>

<p>George Bernard Shaw put it best when he said, “There is no love sincerer than the love of food.” I genuinely believe that good food leads to a good life and my life has been a series of experiences that have proved just that.</p>
<p>So if you ever choose to swing by the campus or are planning on attending school at <a href="https://www.efacademy.com/">EF Academy New York</a>, here are the top five eats in the area and my recommendation from each of those places.</p>
<h3>1. Asian Wave (three-minute drive from campus)</h3>
<p>If you love bubble tea like everyone here does, you’ll be happy to know you can find this delectable drink just downhill from the campus at the rose-hill shopping center. Asian Wave happens to be the most popular restaurant for food deliveries at EF Academy, and almost everyone savors their bubble-tea. My recommendation would be the black tea bubble tea.</p>
<h3>2. Buffalo Wild Wings (15-minute drive from campus)</h3>
<p>What’s better than watching American football on a large plasma TV while stuffing your mouth with spicy chicken wings? (Hint: nothing). Buffalo Wild Wings is known for their world-famous spicy sauces; as well as a bunch of fans screaming at TVs while the NFL is on. I would recommend anyone to get potato wedges with the mango habanero sauce and blazing hot sauce.</p>
<h3>3. Wood & Fire Pizza (seven-minute drive from campus)</h3>
<p>Unlike the 99 cent cheese pizza, Wood & Fire Pizza is known for their wood-oven gourmet style pizzas. With an antique appearance and aroma of fresh pizza coming out of the oven, Wood & Fire Pizza makes you feel like you’re on cloud nine. My personal favorite happens to be the Roman-style pizza which is a thin crust pizza with roasted garlic, herbs, mozzarella and more.</p>
<h3>4. Little Mumbai market (eight-minute drive from campus)</h3>
<p>Coming from India, I fear that my taste buds will stop functioning if I don’t feed them some gratifying Indian food once in a while. While this is not your typical Indian restaurant, Little Mumbai Market is a combination of French and Indian food making it the perfect place to satisfy all your longing appetite needs. I would strongly recommend the deconstructed samosa, an unorthodox culmination of a popular Indian snack and a variety of sauces.</p>
<h3>5. The Cheesecake Factory (16-minute drive from campus)</h3>
<p>Just as the name suggests, this restaurant-chain has arguably some of the greatest cheesecakes that exist anywhere on the face of the planet. The one that I would strongly recommend is the salted caramel cheesecake for it is the MOST scrumptious and delicious dessert I have ever had in my life.</p>

<p class="p1"><span class="s1">Thanksgiving is a day for people to acknowledge everything they are thankful for in their lives. The event that Americans commonly call the “First Thanksgiving” was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in October 1621. Celebrated on the fourth Thursday of every November, Thanksgiving has been considered as a public holiday in the US since 1863. This is the day that ignites the festive spirit and kick-starts the holiday season.</span></p>
<p class="p1">Celebrating this holiday looks different for everybody, but there are a number of traditions you can enjoy whether you’re on campus at EF Academy or not.</p>
<h3 class="p1"><span class="s1"><b>Popular Thanksgiving traditions in the US</b></span></h3>

<p class="p1">Get together with friends and family for a meal which has traditionally included a roast turkey, stuffing and a pumpkin pie.</p>

<p class="p1">Watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving parade live on TV where you’ll see gigantic helium balloons (including a Dragon Ball Z figure which was added this year), floats, performances from Broadway musicals and marching bands parade through the streets of New York City.</p>

<p>In my experience, there are a lot of opportunities in high school to prepare for university but when it comes time to apply there are a few important things you should keep in mind. Universities want students who are well-rounded, which means, with academics and extra-circulars, have skills that make them unique and capable as individuals. You may not be sure about what universities are looking for when you start to work on them, so here are five qualities I’ve found that universities like to see in their applicants.</p>
<h3><strong>Leadership</strong></h3>
<p>Being a leader rather than a boss is something people admire. Universities admire applicants that have taken a post or position (at or outside of school) where you had to lead a group of people to accomplish something. This is a quality that will come in handy if you’re applying to a business school, start your own company or even apply for a management position at a respected firm. The ability to be a leader shows that you can motivate, coordinate with and support a group of people. This is the trait that most successful people share.</p>
<h3><strong>Passion for a chosen subject</strong></h3>
<p>This is crucial as it is directly related to your application and what you might want to study at university. Although you are not expected to know your major till your second year of university (in most cases), it definitely helps to have an idea about the subjects you’d like to study. This will help you with finding the right university for your interests and being aware of this beforehand gives you an opportunity to get some form of work experience, such as an internship, or writing a research paper (if it has something to do with science), attend a summer program studying an in-depth topic that is of your intended major, etc. Anything that is of evidence to the university that you are passionate about a certain subject or topic and you have taken an effort to learn more about it or experience it first-hand.</p>
<h3><strong>Communication skills</strong></h3>
<p>Your proficiency in English, especially if you’re an international student, matters greatly. Being able to communicate your ideas, opinions, and feelings accurately is extremely important in today’s age, especially when the majority of international diplomatic unrest is caused due to the misinterpretation of messages by different nations. Being able to write essays, research papers and applications is something that universities would like to see you ace at. To take it a step further, it’s an incentive if you’re a public speaker and can speak eloquently at debates or formal ceremonies as it gives a sense of confidence and an ability to reach out to people who hesitate.</p>
<h3><strong>Individuality</strong></h3>
<p>Universities want to know what makes you different than the rest of the applicants. They’ll look for a ‘hook’ about you in your personal essay, extra circulars, interview and everything else in your application that tells them more about who you are as a person and what makes you stand out from the rest. To get closer to discovering your ‘X’ factor, you can start by listing out your strengths and weaknesses, and then look how your notable life experiences have shaped you, that’s usually where the answer lies. Self-awareness is one of the most common traits of billionaires today and most of them look for that trait in the people they hire.</p>
<h3><strong>Commitment to service</strong></h3>
<p>Giving back to your community is something that should be inculcated and not dictated. We are very fortunate individuals to be blessed with all the luxuries of life and it is thus our duty to give back in any way that we can to those who might not be as fortunate as we are. Service isn’t limited just to human beings, try to find something about the world that you feel is in bad shape and try to find ways to make it better, it could be anything from conservation of water to animal rights. Universities want to see continuous effort and commitment to whatever form of service you are involved in.</p>

Here are 10 reasons why I think New York is the best place to study.</p>

There’s no doubt that this kind of environment will inspire you to work hard and challenge yourself to move out of your comfort zone to maximize your chances of success in any field.</p>

<p class="p4">The Subway system, which operates 24/7, is a cost-effective, quick, and easy way for you to get to wherever you’re going. It requires you to get out of your comfort zone and go live with a bunch of strangers, miles away from the place you call home. <p>Once you have a good idea about the school you’ll be going to, find ways to get in touch with students who are currently studying there who are from your country. Try and understand how they transitioned into that environment and the specific challenges they faced while doing so. This will help you imagine yourself in their position and you’ll get a much realistic account of what you might go through.</p>
<h3><strong>3. Spend time with family and friends<br>
</strong></h3>
<p>No matter whether you’re anxious or excited for boarding, don’t forget spending time with those you love. Soon you won’t be around these people you call your family and friends and it will dawn on you if you don’t cherish the time you have with them. Try not to be too mentally occupied with what’s going to happen and focus on meeting friends and maybe even some close relatives before you pack up and leave. I can assure you, you won’t regret doing this.</p>
<h3><strong>4. Make a checklist<br>
</strong></h3>
<p>With a whole closet to fit in the suitcase, making sure all documents are in order and all formalities are completed, there are too many things for your already occupied brain to keep track of. Which is why I suggest that you make a checklist of everything that you’re supposed to take with you and tasks you’re supposed to complete so you can check off the items you’ve safely kept in your luggage and tasks you’ve completed. This way you’ll have keep track of everything and hopefully won’t miss anything out.</p>
<h3><strong>5. Expect the unexpected<br>
</strong></h3>
<p>Even though you might have sort of a clear picture of the school and its location, be prepared for some surprises. Things aren’t always as they might seem on the internet or even on videos. Once you actually get to the place there’ll be things that you won’t be prepared for but if you expect the unexpected, it won’t come as a shock at least and will be easy to adapt to. Be open-minded and welcome change with open arms to get the best out of your experience.</p>
