English language modules
Advanced language skills:
This course takes students’ language skills from a base of IELTS 5.0 and extends their knowledge of language and language structures. These language skills provide a foundation for the students to understand the academic content of and develop in the remainder of the course. Presentation skills are also improved during this module.
English for academic purposes:
This module provides the students with a sound basis in academic writing, reading and listening skills. Areas that are covered include paraphrasing, summary writing, question analysis, essay planning, note-taking skills, and introduction/conclusions, along with key language required for seminars and tutorials.
IELTS preparation:
This class focuses on the specific language and examination skills necessary to enable students to meet the IELTS score as laid out in the conditions of their conditional offers.
Academic skills modules
Academic cultures:
Enables students to develop and learn the practical skills required for university life in the UK for example effective communication in seminars and group work.
Maths:
We have found it is imperative for these students to have a good foundation in mathematics and to start understanding key concepts early on in the course. They can, if need be, go on to study the extra maths modules in either terms 2 or 3.
Application workshop:
Students are introduced to the UK HE system through this research course, giving them the information they need in order to be able to apply to courses and to make informed choices of institutions appropriate to their needs. The skills required for successful applications to university are also taught, including how to write an effective personal statement.
Quantitative and qualitative research methods:
Students from overseas are often ill prepared for an academic environment which requires an active approach to knowledge and information gathering. This course intends to equip them with the critical and evaluative skills to assess and judge the validity, reliability and appropriacy of evidence and research, and to create adequate conceptual and theoretical frameworks for their studies. Whatever the subject studied at university, an advanced degree of quantitative and qualitative research methods is prerequisite. This module teaches students how to produce, analyse and interpret data, through looking at statistics in a problem solving environment. Variants of the course are offered, essentially on a sliding spectrum between qualitative and quantitative foci according to the future needs of the student: the course for a literature or art student will be at one end, for an accounting or linguistics student at another.
Critical thinking:
While critical thinking is encouraged in all areas of the foundation year, this module is designed to give students the discrete metacognitive tools to approach, analyse and construct arguments in an academic setting. Through a critical awareness of their own reading and writing, the course enables them to be more confident with their learning in Higher Education.
