Class materials for teaching adults

We offer adult students two types of lessons so they can combine individualized attention with a group dynamic. We encourage you to bring your expertise to the online classroom. Our in-house Academics team also uploads pre-prepared class materials as an optional teaching resource for teachers.

Group lessons

Group Lessons (GLs) are 45 minute online conversation classes designed for speaking practice with carefully selected topics pitched appropriately for different levels of difficulty.

Class sizes are small (6-8 students) to ensure there is ample opportunity for students to participate in conversation practice. GLs are extremely flexible and offer a new conversation topic every day with business, travel, and general interest themes. Optional lesson materials and teaching plans are provided.

Students can attend these classes using their smartphone app, tablet, or computer. Teachers prepare a report after class with feedback highlighting the language and topic from the lesson as well as some of the strong and weak points from the class. Students usually expect the report within 24 hours.

Private Lessons

Private Lessons (PLs) focus on one-to-one instruction between a teacher and a student, lasting either 20 or 40 minutes. These lessons are specially tailored to deliver personalized instruction. The optional lesson material is created around the self-study courseware lessons and offers a lot of versatility in terms of learning objectives. The focus of PLs is for the teacher to help guide and respond to specific student needs. For example, a student could select a lesson that helps them to reinforce a learning task that they feel is particularly important or difficult. Alternatively, students could use the lesson as a preview for a new section of the course that they’d like extra help with.

The lesson usually follows an overall path that encourages students to practice speaking using the core language from the unit. They might start with a short task that mirrors the activity from the self-study courseware. This is the first round for students to try out what they have learned. Teachers will listen carefully and help students to correct errors and identify new language. Students will then get a chance to retry the task, with the aim of improving in the areas the teacher helped to review. Students can attend these classes using their smartphone app, tablet, or computer.
