EF Education is proud to announce a new partnership with Global Vision International
This joint program is a collaboration between EF Education First and Global Vision International where volunteers are able to join a 2 week EF Spanish language course at EF’s Escuela Internacional de Espanol in Quito and then head up into Otavalo to work as volunteer on GVI’s community education project.
EF Quito
During their first two weeks in Quito, students will take structured Spanish languages classes at their own level – ranging from beginner to advanced, based on a placement test at the beginning of the course. At EF, will be enrolled with international classmates from all over the world and accommodation options include single or shared room in a local homestay or the EF residence. The course includes between 3-5 hours per day of language lab work, group discussions, guest speakers, and special interest lessons in cultural topics to expand vocabulary (ie: Spanish for Tourism, Film Studies, Culinary Arts, Spanish Slang, etc.). The school is centrally located with a unique opportunity for cultural contact, as it is a school of English for local Ecuadorians as well. There is wireless internet, a computer lab, and student lounge at the school, and cafés just five minutes away. To optimize your social and cultural experience, the EF school staff will organize group activities and excursions - from pickup soccer in the Parc Carolina to a bike ride through Cotopaxi, and from cooking lessons at school to salsa dancing out on the town. Your main homework will be to learn the language by living it! At the end of the course, students will receive an EF certificate of completion proving your level of language proficiency achieved.
GVI Otavalo Project
After the course, you will put your language skills to the test with GVI! While in Otavalo, volunteers have the amazing opportunity the work in one of Ecuador’s poorest communities, teaching basic numeracy and literacy and immersing themselves in the local Andean indigenous culture. Living with a local family in the lovely market town of Otavalo, you will be able to strengthen your Spanish and then travel to remote, rural communities to teach on the educational programs that have been set up in conjunction between GVI and local indigenous leaders Longer durations are available.
What difference does the project make?
With just one or two teachers per school, the volunteers’ teaching presence allows the children more opportunity to receive help in their education. GVI Secondary School scholarships allow the children to follow on into Secondary which was not possible before. A substantial part of the fee goes towards the day-to-day running costs of the projects themselves throughout the year, including daily transport, food subsidies for the school meals and fruit for the children (sometimes their only meal of the day), educational materials for classes, monthly birthday celebrations, painting and maintenance.
