Life in Ireland

Landscapes of the “Emerald Isle”

The Republic of Ireland—called Éire by the Irish—offers a surprising range of landscapes: rolling green hills dotted with sheep and castle ruins, craggy coastline of sheer cliffs and sandy beaches and bustling urban centers. Whichever of Ireland’s 26 counties you live in—be it Waterford or Wexford, Clare or Cork—one thing is sure to remain the same: your host family’s fierce pride in the land the call the "Emerald Isle."

Irish Family life

Life in Ireland is still quite family oriented. Your hosts will be keen to teach you all about traditional Irish culture and customs. You will no doubt be served a hearty Irish breakfast in the morning, scones and jam at teatime, and fish and chips or a stew for supper.

At school, you’ll learn more about Ireland’s long struggle for independence. Ireland is officially bilingual and you will see road signs printed in both English and Gaelic, the Irish language. The Irish speak English in a very particular, melodious manner, “to be sure”.

Music is the backbone of Irish culture and Enya, U2 and the Cranberries are among Ireland’s most famous exports. A visit to the local pub will almost certainly feature a sing-along of traditional songs. At the weekends, take hikes in the lush countryside, cycle along the west coast or learn to sail with your new Irish friends.
