The practice of storytelling: Mimi’s EF journey

As EF High School Exchange Year’s Copywriter & Content Coordinator, Mimi considers herself a kind of storyteller. “Our program brings cultures together, opens communities to the wider world, and creates lifelong friendships that span the globe,” she said. “It’s my responsibility to keep track of these once-in-a-lifetime experiences and share them.”

There’s certainly no shortage of stories that Mimi comes across each day, which is one of the reasons she loves her job at EF Education First. “Literally every day I hear stories that blow my mind. I count myself fortunate to witness to the innumerable ways that our program truly changes people’s lives for the better.”

Part of Mimi’s role includes capturing these stories and putting them into words across digital, email and print campaigns, but she’s also had the opportunity to bring students’ perspectives to life through social media. For the recent solar eclipse, Mimi took the lead on concepting how to showcase five HSEY students who were in the path of totality during the eclipse, letting them share their experiences through Instagram stories on the HSEY account.

“I went so far as to sit down with a map to understand the three different time zones, what cities our students were from, when their peak totality would be. I felt like a physicist at one point, it was so confusing!” she laughed.

On top of being High School Exchange Year’s resident storyteller, Mimi is a familiar face in EF’s Boston fitness studio, where she teaches twice-weekly yoga classes. Yoga has been a passion of Mimi’s for many years, and she jumped at the chance to bring her passion to work.

Mimi received her 200-hour Registered Yoga Teacher training the summer before she started at EF, and was thrilled when she found out Office Management was looking for fitness teachers to lead a variety of classes for staff during lunch and after work.

“Deciding to teach here was a no brainer,” Mimi said. “It allowed me to share my love of yoga with the EF community. The fact that employees here not only have the opportunity, but are encouraged, to get up from their desks in the middle of the day and take an hour to commit to their personal well-being is unique. You don’t find that at a lot of other places and I am so proud to be involved in that initiative.”

When Mimi’s not teaching yoga or showcasing the best student stories, she can be found running along the Esplanade (her favorite spot in Boston) or painting in her at-home studio, another passion of hers that led to a college degree in Fine Art. It’s how she loves to unwind after a long day, but she’ll tell you the days never feel too long.

“Every day, I wake up in the morning and can’t wait to get to work. To be able to walk into an office and be surrounded by like-minded, high-energy and passionate individuals who are both my colleagues and best friends is incredible.”
