A blog that looks behind the scenes at how we bring our mission to life, every day

Hello DC: EF pops up (in pink!) across the US capital

If you’re in Washington, D.C., this week you’ll get a warm welcome in true EF Education First style—with plenty of energetic people wearing lots of EF Hello Pink!

Seventy-two EF Ambassadors from more than 30 countries have flown into D.C. where they’ll be popping up all week to greet fellow travelers, share their EF experiences and spread positive vibes throughout the nation’s capital. Together, these international ambassadors speak 16 languages and have had had a wide range of EF experiences, from learning a language at one of EF’s International Language Campuses, to becoming part of an American host family with EF High School Exchange Year, going on an EF trip with their school (very possibly to D.C.) through EF Explore America or EF Educational Tours, and more. But they all have one thing in common—a passion for exploring the world.

At EF Education First we believe in one simple truth—that the world is better when people seek to understand one another. Our culturally immersive language, exchange, travel and academic programs are designed to help bring people together to ensure a better global future for all. For more than 50 years, EF has helped millions of people see new places, experience new cultures, and learn new things about the world and about themselves.

Our Ambassadors can’t wait to meet you. In fact, you can track down any EF Ambassador in D.C. from June 11-14 and strike up a conversation with them to get their country or state stamp in your EF passport (if you don’t already have a passport, ask them for one!). If you get 10 stamps, they’ll help you enter for a chance to win an exciting grand prize—a one-week trip (including flights) to any EF International Language Campus around the world. So, are you on the ground in D.C. this week and ready for your next adventure? Come say hello! Here are some of the people you’ll meet:

Home country: Mexico

Languages spoken: English, Spanish, French

EF experiences: EF Academy

In their own words: My time at EF Academy definitely changed my life for the better. Living and studying in a truly international community in a new country changed the way I see the world around me. Through EF, I have also been able to solidify who I am and what my cultural identity means to me. However, the best part of EF Academy for me has been the people. At EF, I have met some of the most extraordinary individuals who I am now lucky to call friends. I also consider myself lucky to have found faculty members who have been incredibly supportive and helped me succeed throughout my time at EF Academy.

Home country: United States

Languages spoken: English, Polish, some French

EF experiences: Five trips with EF Educational Tours

In their own words: My life has been turned around through EF and these trips. Growing up, I never had an extended family, but now I have some of the most amazing family members in my life thanks to the bonds I’ve created through EF. Since my educational tours, I’ve been able to give back by speaking to my high school about my EF experiences. And I’ve had plenty of memorable moments on each of the trips I’ve been on, from seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris to swimming with sharks in Belize.

MORITZ

Home country: Germany

Languages spoken: German, English, some Spanish

EF experiences: EF High School Exchange Year

In their own words: Spending an entire year abroad shaped me in many ways. I learned to be more open than I used to be. I also learned to take every opportunity offered to me and to become a “yes” person. I also widened my worldwide network. I was able to start an award-winning company called PEAK, which went on to win the Disney Creativity Award. Presenting my newfound company in front of hundreds of people and in front of possible investors in English would have seemed impossible for me before that year.

EMMA

Home country: The Netherlands

Languages spoken: English, Dutch, some French and some Spanish

EF experiences: EF High School Exchange Year

In their own words: EF helped me realize how much I enjoy learning about new countries and cultures. Through EF, I’ve also been introduced to new parts of myself I didn’t know yet. After returning to the Netherlands, I started a consultancy focused on international studies of tourism management and have remained active as both an EF Ambassador and an interview leader for EF High School Exchange Year.

ANA

Home country: Spain

Languages spoken: Spanish, English

EF experiences: EF High School Exchange Year

In their own words: Living away from home in a different place with new people and new routines makes you appreciate the little things. Since I was little, I wanted to live the “American Dream.” Through my year abroad, I went to an American high school, where I had my own locker, enjoyed football every Friday night, joined the cheer leading squad, and danced at homecoming and prom. Experiencing American customs and traditions was such a memorable experience for me.

ELISABETH

Home country: Austria

Languages spoken: German, English, French

EF experiences: EF High School Exchange Year

In their own words: After my exchange I made sure to choose a college major that was international and that would enable me to go abroad again. I am currently studying international business in German, English and French, and recently returned from a semester abroad in Thailand. I have also visited my host family twice and have had the chance to show them around Austria when they came to visit me. Getting to finally show them what I had been telling them about Austria and sharing my culture with them was amazing.

PAULINE

Pauline_ambassador

via GIPHY

Home country: Germany

Languages spoken: German, English

EF experiences: EF High School Exchange Year

In their own words: One of my favorite EF moments came during the summer ambassador program in New York at the end of my exchange year. On my last day, all the summer ambassadors were sitting in a circle in the staff room, and we started to talk about the last four weeks we had spent together in New York. It was unbelievable that we had only known one another for four weeks but it felt like a lifetime. In that moment, I realized I have a third family (in addition to my exchange year host family) from all over the world and this EF family will last forever.

Languages spoken: Spanish, English, some Italian

EF experiences: EF Academy and an internship with EF in London

In their own words: Living thousands of miles away from my family for two years made me independent. It helped me appreciate my culture and my country, and to realize that the world is waiting to be explored. After my first year at EF Academy, I did a two-week-long internship with EF in London, which was an experience I’ll never forget.

MICHELLE

In their own words: Since coming back from my exchange, I produced a video of my year abroad and got into photography, which has become my passion. I love capturing all the little moments, like when we had football nights on Fridays or went on midnight Slurpee runs with friends. The camera helps me remember these moments and how I felt as they were happening. If I hadn’t gone on exchange, I wouldn’t have realized my passion for travel and photography.
