EF Stories: Lena from Germany at EF London
"It has always been a dream of mine to fly to London. Through my language trip, I not only fulfilled my dream but also made international friendships and improved my English!
Why did I choose EF?
I can answer this question quite easily! I initially planned to do a year abroad with EF, but I postponed it until after high school. After extensive research and attending fairs, I felt most comfortable with them. I also knew that EF offered language trips. So, I reached out to EF again because I always received friendly advice.
Why a language trip?
A language trip is just perfect if you want to complement your vacation with something meaningful. In the two weeks, I not only improved my English and made international friendships but also got to experience England's culture like a true Londoner.
Arrival in London
I had booked a transfer for my arrival in London, which I was very grateful for. I probably wouldn't have been able to find my way around the busy London Heathrow Airport late at night due to excitement and nervousness. This made my flight more relaxed because I didn't have to worry about where to go. I just had to wait for the EF shuttle driver.
School and the first day
The school in London is absolutely beautiful! A large historic building with a cafeteria serving delicious food and a central location, right by the London Eye and Waterloo Station, where almost every underground or bus stops. Moreover, you can easily reach other attractions like the Tate Modern, House of Parliament, and St. Paul's Cathedral with a short walk.
On the first day, I was warmly welcomed by the EF staff. After the "placement interview," we had a tour of the school in a small group, where I also got to know my first fellow students.
Host Family
During my stay, I chose to stay with a host family. It's the best way to speak English around the clock and become more confident at the same time. Additionally, I had the opportunity to get to know the Indian culture as my host parents originally came from India. Every evening, they cooked fresh, mostly Indian, food for me. We always ate and talked together. They were also very interested in me and German culture. I am still in touch with them.
Classes, Teachers, and Staff
The classes were always interesting and very practical. We usually started with a topic, worked on tasks in the EF workbook, and then had discussions among ourselves. This not only expanded my vocabulary, but I also spoke more freely and confidently, and I got to know the other students better.
The teachers and staff were always friendly, and they helped as much as possible with any problems or questions. They enjoyed talking and laughing with me. I immediately felt comfortable at EF London.
Leisure and Personal Highlight
During my free time, I saw a lot of London. From the London Eye, House of Parliament, St. Paul's Cathedral, and Tower Bridge to Notting Hill, Westminster Abbey, and shopping on Oxford Street, I saw it all. But Camden Town and the Camden Market were my favorites. You can find second-hand shops, food, and souvenirs from all over the world there! Camden's charm drew me and my friend there three times during my two weeks in London!
Summary
In summary, I can say that my language trip was something very special. I am very grateful for this experience and the new friendships I made. I would really love to go on another language trip with EF!
