Dr. Mahoney has a BA & MA in Teaching, as well as a PhD in Educational Leadership. He also has over 15 years of experience working in and leading private schools providing high quality programmes that promote global citizenship and life-long learning skills. Dr. Mahoney previously served as Head for a K-12 school in New York and is a recipient of Edward Ford Fellowship awarded by the National Association of Independent Schools.
Dr. Trew received her BA and MA in English from Florida Atlantic University. After attending Oxford University for postgraduate studies, she received her PhD in English literature from Florida State University. Dr. Trew has taught English for over 22 years, almost half of which were spent teaching A1 English in the International Baccalaureate programme. In addition to teaching A1 English, Dr.Trew has been an IB coordinator and has attended IB training for heads of school. She is the author of the recently-published book, Mary Wollstonecraft and Married Women’s Rights.
Ms. Gueye received a BS in biomedical engineering from the University of Rochester and an MS in biomedical engineering from the University of California at Irvine. Before joining the NYC Teaching Fellows programme, she travelled and studied in Cuba, where she became proficient in Spanish. She has taught mathematics in New York City high schools and recently earned an MS in secondary mathematics education from the City College of New York. Ms. Gueye has considerable experience teaching and tutoring SAT, GMAT and GRE mathematics. An avid runner, she completed the 2004 National AIDS marathon in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Ms. Beermann has been teaching for seven years and has taught the International Baccalaureate chemistry programme for five years. She has an extensive educational background in both biology and chemistry, which allows her to bring significant expertise and insight into the classroom. Ms. Beermann served as IB coordinator for a large high school in Canada, where she was heavily involved in the development and evaluation of standardised testing. She works for the International Baccalaureate Organization as a chemistry Paper 2 examiner and has participated in several IB training conferences.
Ms. Dragon received a BA in Asian studies from Bowdoin College. She studied in Harbin, China, on an intensive Chinese studies and language immersion programme and earned a secondary school teaching certification in social studies. Ms. Dragon taught and managed English programmes in Shanghai and Taipei before earning an MEd in international education from University of Massachusetts Amherst. Her professional interests include materials and curriculum development, teacher education, inquiry learning, and educational equity. She is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.
Chemistry Teacher Mr. Kurten graduated from St Andrews University in Scotland with an honors degree in Chemistry. He then attended South Hampton University in England where he pursued a master’s degree developing novel aluminosilicate chemicals with potential use in the cosmetics industry. After this he taught in a school in Botswana for two years, before spending several years teaching in London . Most recently he was Head of the Chemistry Department in a new, ground-breaking college in Bosnia-Herzegovina. He teaches IB Diploma Chemistry at EF International Academy.
Ms. Meissner-Borton has been a theatre educator for over 20 years. As an actress, she has appeared in television and film and has worked off-Broadway and in regional theatres. She has appeared in over 100 commercials. Ms. Meissner-Borton has taught theatre arts at the State University of New York, Rockland Community College and in public schools in New York and Connecticut. She earned a BA from The New School in New York and a master’s degree in educational theatre from NYU. She has New York state certification in both theatre and English and IB certification in theatre arts. Ms. Meissner- Borton grew up and attended schools all over the world - in Taiwan, Indonesia, West Pakistan, Turkey , India, Saudi Arabia and Hawaii - and she uses this personal experience to connect with our diverse student body.
Ms. Vives recently joined the faculty of EF International Academy New York as a mathematics teacher. She is originally from Barcelona, Spain, and she received her BS in physics from the University of Barcelona. Ms. Vives taught high school mathematics for three years in Spain and currently tutors students in mathematics and physics in New York City. She enjoys working with students who have various learning abilities and likes the process of creating effective strategies to stimulate student learning.
Dr. Litvine received an MS in physiology from Moscow State University and trained as a behavioral neuroscientist at the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences in Moscow. In 1999 she received a PhD in biology, having written a PhD thesis about mechanisms of learning and memory. She has worked as a postdoctoral research scientist in neurobiology in Russia, Switzerland and the USA and has published several papers in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Dr. Litvine has taught students from around the world and tutored extensively in New York, where all her students have successfully passed the New York Regents exams in biology and chemistry.
Ms. Milhouse has taught in Australia and Ecuador. In her first year at EF International Academy New York she oversaw the development of the Creative Head Quarters programme, where students explore creative design and produce projects in both two and three dimensions. She has a BA in fine arts and diplomas in graphic design and education from Australia. Ms. Milhouse has taught IB visual arts for six years, and many of her students have elected to pursue art and design degrees at universities in Europe and the USA. She is a published and award-winning children’s book illustrator, with artistic abilities covering a great range of media. She is fluent in Spanish.
IB Biology Teacher, Mr. Fleming, studied biology at Siena College in Albany, New York and finished his studies at East Stroudsburg University, Pennsylvania receiving a diploma in Secondary Education. Mr. Fleming spent four years in Poland teaching English as a Second Language in Krakow and then IB Biology at the International American School in Warsaw. He recently moved back to the United States and will be teaching IB Biology at EF International Academy.
