Can students attend only one semester?
In some very limited cases- yes. But students should be encouraged to attend one full year. Students should be encouraged to begin in the Autumn semester since most community colleges do not have summer academic schedules.
What courses or subjects can a student enroll in?
Most College Year students will enroll in general education classes. Since they are unlikely to pursue a degree they will usually be free to enroll in whatever classes they chose.
There are some exceptions to this: Some schools have a required core curriculum (eg, Marymount Manhattan College ) and some have required courses for international students (eg, Santa Monica College.
Most schools will require an English entrance exam even if students have already shown proficiency. This may mean that students who do not test at high enough will be required to take additional English classes. This is very rare with European students.
Please see individual school fact sheets for list of “areas of study”.
Will students receive a certificate at the end of the year?
UPS is working with ILS production to produce a certificate for students finishing College Year in May 2003.
